では (de wa) vs には (ni wa)
Core Rule
Both では and には make the location the topic of the sentence.
The difference comes from the particle underneath:
Pattern | Base Particle | Main Meaning | Ask Yourself |
|---|---|---|---|
では | で | Action happens at this place | What happens there? |
には | に | Something exists there / destination / fact about that place | What is there? |
では (de wa)
Use では when talking about an action that happens at a location.
Think:
"As for this place, what happens here?"
Examples
Japanese | English |
|---|---|
学校では勉強します。 | At school, I study. |
公園では野球をします。 | At the park, I play baseball. |
ウォルマートでは買い物をします。 | At Walmart, I shop. |
日本では寿司をよく食べます。 | In Japan, people often eat sushi. |
Notice all of these involve actions:
- study
- play
- shop
- eat
には (ni wa)
Use には when talking about what exists at a location or a fact about that location.
Think:
"As for this place, what is there?"
Examples
Japanese | English |
|---|---|
学校には先生がいます。 | There are teachers at school. |
公園にはアヒルがいます。 | There are ducks at the park. |
ウォルマートにはバナナがあります。 | Walmart has bananas. |
日本には富士山があります。 | Japan has Mt. Fuji. |

Time vs Place
One thing that confused me:
で does NOT mark time.
Time uses に.
Correct | Meaning |
|---|---|
3時に寝ます。 | I sleep at 3. |
月曜日に働きます。 | I work on Monday. |
家で寝ます。 | I sleep at home. |
Notice:
- 3 o'clock is a time → に
- Home is a place → で
You can even combine them:
3時に家で寝ます。
I sleep at home at 3.
About は
The は in では and には does not change the basic job of で or に.
Instead, it adds:
- topic
- emphasis
- contrast
Think:
"As for..."
Examples:
日本には富士山があります。
As for Japan, there is Mt. Fuji.
日本では寿司を食べます。
As for Japan, people eat sushi.
